Roof Access for Research and Other Activities

EHS understands that roof access may be required for a number of different research tasks and other activities. Designated, and approved, roof spaces for research and other activities require approval from a number of individuals and departments:

  • Department Head
  • Lead Principal Investigator
  • Building/Space Representative for the Proposed Location
  • Environmental Health and Safety (EHS)
  • Public Safety

Steps Required for Roof Access

Steps for Gaining Approval for Roof Access:

EHS will review your completed Roof Access SOP Template and Diagram. We will reach out to you when approval is granted and also if any further clarification is needed.

If there any changes to your roof access usage, please update the SOP and diagram as needed and resubmit for approval from EHS.

After EHS approval is granted, please seek approval from Public Safety by following the steps detailed below.

The Department of Public Safety maintains an authorized roof access list and holds the keys required for accessing roofs.

Department of Public Safety preliminary steps for requesting roof access:

  • Faculty or staff sponsor/advisor will initiate a Letter of Request for roof access
    • The letter must contain the following:
      • The building where access is needed
      • List of names of all the individuals that will need access to the roof
      • Nature of the experiment/activity
      • Start Date (allow at least one week from the date of the letter to the starting date)
      • End Date
      • Name of the individual/individuals granted authorization to sign out/sign in the keys, 24 hour phone number and RPI email.
      • A procedure for the research or other activity that is proposed for the roof location. It is recommended that you use the procedures and templates described in the section above (Roof Access SOP and Diagram). After approval is granted by EHS for your Roof Access SOP and Diagram, submit these documents along with a completed letter of request for roof access to the Institute's Emergency Management & Clery Compliance Officer.
  • If changes are made to the SOP or diagram, please update the letter of request for roof access and resubmit to the Institute's Emergency Management & Clery Compliance Officer
