Fire Safety

Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) partners with the campus community to implement a fire safety program that prevents fires and complies with New York State, National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA) and City of Troy fire codes.

EHS educates faculty, staff, and students about fire safety requirements and best practices through training, inspections, and fire evacuation drills. Each of us are responsible for complying with fire safety requirements to support fire prevention on campus.

Crowd Management

Crowd management is essential to ensuring safety during gatherings, particularly in venues with large numbers of attendees.  This page provides information for event coordinators and crowd managers to ensure campus events run smoothly and safely.

Fire Evacuation Drills

Fire evacuation drills are required by the New York State Fire Code. These unannounced drills provide an opportunity for building occupants to practice evacuation procedures.

Fire Prevention

Understanding and complying with fire safety requirements is everyone's responsibility. Your actions can prevent fires on campus. This page provides information about common issues identified during building inspections.

Fire Protection System Impairment & Fire Watch Program

An impairment is defined as the planned or unplanned condition in which a fire protection or detection system, or any portion of it, is rendered inoperable. This program establishes the processes to be followed immediately after an unplanned (emergency) impairment, as well as the procedures required before authorization is granted for a planned impairment.

Fraternity & Sorority Commons Property Reviews

EHS partners with Fraternity & Sorority Commons (FSC) and FSC chapter leadership to conduct property reviews of FSC chapter houses each fall and spring semester. These reviews play a vital role in supporting fire and life safety standards as well as helping to maintain a safe and welcoming environment for chapter residents, guests, and the surrounding community.

NYS Fire Inspections

The New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control (OFPC) performs annual fire safety inspections in all campus buildings. The OFPC inspector identifies violations of fire codes and educates faculty, staff and students about fire safety and prevention.
