Fall Protection Program

Falls from elevation consistently rank as leading cause of accidents and fatalities in the workplace nationwide. The Institute is committed to protecting students, employees and visitors from fall hazards. Through proper planning, hazard elimination, and safe design, engineering controls have been installed, safe work practices have been implemented and proper personal fall protection equipment have been selected to ensure the safety of everyone on campus working from heights.

EHS conducts initial, in-person, fall protection training throughout the course of every year at the Institutes main (Troy, New York) location and also provides online refresher training in Percipio, the Institutes online training platform.

Fall Protection Program

All persons engaged in work-related activities where there is a risk of falling from heights are required to follow the requirements in the the Protection Program Program, which meets the requirements of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA) general industry (29 CFR 1910, Subpart D and 1910.140) and construction industry (29 CFR 1926, Subpart M) standards.

Fall Protection Plan Worksheet

Fall protection plans are required to be completed for working within controlled access zones (CAZ). CAZs are locations apply to work at heights in areas where fall protection systems are unable to be used, such as low sloped roofs, leading edge work, roofs less than 50 feet in width, etc.. CAZs include safety monitoring systems and warning line systems.

Roof Access Procedure - Fume Hood Exhaust Shutdown

If roof access is required on a building that contains fume hoods or releases other potentially hazardous materials via the roof, additional coordination is required. The roof access procedure for buildings with chemical fume hoods must be reviewed prior to working on roofs.
