Labs and shops generate waste during their normal processes at RPI. Some wastes are regulated by state and federal laws and require special attention. As your group identifies materials that are obsolete, expired, partially used, or generated during work activities, follow the steps below to ensure your waste is handled correctly.
Waste Disposal Process
Identify the material your group is looking to remove from your shop or lab.
- Is this waste generated by a research process?
- What are the hazards associated with this waste stream?
- Is this a full container of material that is now obsolete to your group?
- Is this an empty container with only residual material remaining?
- Is the material expired?
Chemicals no longer needed by the lab can be added to the Chemical Reuse Program. Use the Chemical ReUse Decision Tree to determine if the chemical can be accepted by the ReUse Program or should be sent for disposal. Submit the RPI ReUse Program Form to add a chemical to the program or request a chemical from the program for delivery to your lab. If you have large quantities of excess materials (such as during a lab closure or move), EHS can visit your lab to assess materials for possible reallocation.
- Choose appropriate containers for your waste stream
- Consider size, liquid vs solid, material compatibility, and sharp hazards
- Order containers through OSCAR or at the Cogswell and Walker stockrooms
- Label waste containers with contents
- Include percentages for mixtures
- Use chemical names, not chemical formulas
- Some waste streams have additional labeling requirements, see below
- Store waste per Chemical Hygiene Plan guidelines
- Store in secondary containment
- Segregate incompatible materials
- Keep waste containers closed when not actively accumulating waste
- More details on waste storage can be found on the Regulated Waste Accumulation page
- Follow requirements for specific waste streams
- Chemical Waste
- Biological Waste
- Radioactive Waste
- Combination Waste
- Universal Waste
- Sharps Waste
- Empty Containers
Option 1: Remove container from your inventory and mark it as disposed in RMM using the barcode number on the container
Option 2: Print a barcode collection sheet, remove barcode from container and place on sheet, put sheet with the waste you have collected for pick-up, vendor will collect waste for disposal and bring barcode sheet to EHS, EHS will mark chemical as disposed in RMM
Option 3: Print barcode collection sheet, remove barcode from container and place on sheet, bring/send barcode sheet to EHS, EHS will mark chemicals as disposed in RMM
All regulated waste is picked up at its point of generation, be it a laboratory, studio or shop. Do not remove regulated waste from the area where it was generated.
Regulated waste is picked up by Rensselaer's waste contractor every Friday. All regulated waste pickup requests are made by submitting the online Regulated Waste Pick-Up Request Form. All waste forms submitted after 5:00pm on Wednesday will be processed for the following week.
Please note that waste will not be collected if Rensselaer is officially closed on a Friday, so members of the campus community should plan accordingly.
Regulated waste that is not properly packaged or labeled will not be picked up until the issue has been corrected. The requestor, or their designee, should be available during the scheduled waste collection day to answer any questions about the regulated waste.
