Managing heat stress is an important task in our day-to-day activities during summer months. Taking steps to prevent hazardous heat exposures will lower your risk of experiencing a heat-related illness.
Stay informed about local weather, including heat advisories and warnings, by monitoring information from the National Weather Service.
Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) recommends taking precautions during times of extreme heat:
- Stay hydrated by drinking water; avoid beverages containing caffeine.
- Increase breaks while working outdoors and in hot indoor locations.
- Take breaks in a cooler environment, such as a shaded location or air-conditioned building.
- Adjust schedules to plan strenuous activities at a cooler time of day, such as early morning or late afternoon.
- Be familiar with the signs and symptoms of heat-related illnesses.
The Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) Heat Exposure webpage provides information on heat-related illnesses, first aid, prevention, personal risk factors and other resources.
