Laboratory Door Signage

Laboratory door signage is an essential component of RPI’s laboratory safety program as it communicates laboratory specific hazard assessment information. All laboratories and shops are required to display an EHS Laboratory Door Sign on the exterior (corridor side) of their main laboratory door used for entry. Information on the sign informs individuals of the hazards that are present in the space, provides necessary information in the case of an emergency, and supports compliance with regulatory requirements.

Environmental Health & Safety (EHS):

  • Provides information and training on Laboratory Door Sign requirements.
  • Offers guidance and assistance to campus partners on the identification of hazard types and development of Laboratory Door Signs.
  • Maintains a repository of Laboratory Door Signs that are accessible to the campus community.

Principal Investigators, Laboratory and/or Shop Supervisors:

  • Ensure Laboratory Door Signs are accurate and posted for their areas.
  • Update Laboratory Door Signs when hazards in room or contact information changes.
  • Provide updated Laboratory Door Sign information to EHS.

Building Coordinators:

Work with Principal Investigators, Laboratory Supervisors and Department Chairs to ensure that laboratories and shops in their buildings have accurate Laboratory Door Signs posted.

Follow these instructions to create your own Laboratory Door Sign:

  1. Open the Self-Serve Laboratory Door Sign Template in BOX and download it.
    • To update an existing Laboratory Door Sign, download the sign from the building folder and make the needed changes following the instructions below.
    • The Center for Engineering and Precision Medicine (CEPM) located in the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai has a specific Laboratory Door Sign Template.
  2. Open the downloaded file in Microsoft Word, and enable editing.
  3. Fill out all unshaded cells.
    • Double click or use the dropdowns to enter information in the cells.
    • Use TAB to move between cells that require information. If you do not have information for a cell, you can delete the text or select the blank from the dropdown.
    • For Hazard Pictograms to appear, select from the dropdown and hit TAB.
  4. Email a copy of the completed sign to EHS@rpi.edu.
  5. Print and post the Laboratory Door Sign at the main entrance to the space. EHS recommends installing Laboratory Door Signs in a wall mounted sign holder.

The Laboratory Door Sign Program Manual provides additional details for creating and updating Laboratory Door Signs.
