EHS Shares Safety Tips During Fire Prevention Week

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 2025 Fire Prevention Week theme is “Charge into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home.” This year’s campaign focuses on keeping people safe from the fire hazards connected to everyday rechargeable devices and battery-powered equipment.

Why This Matters
Lithium-ion batteries power many items we rely on daily—phones, laptops, power tools, and more. While generally safe, these batteries can overheat, catch fire, or even explode if they are damaged, improperly charged, or used incorrectly. With their increasing presence in our daily lives, it’s critical to understand how to charge, store, and dispose of them safely.

Key Safety Messages
NFPA encourages everyone to “charge into fire safety” by following these tips:

  • Use the right charger that comes with your device or is certified by the manufacturer.
  • Avoid charging unattended or overnight, especially on beds, sofas, or under pillows.
  • Charge devices on hard, flat surfaces where heat can dissipate.
  • Keep batteries away from heat sources and direct sunlight.
  • Replace damaged batteries immediately—swelling, leakage, or unusual odors are warning signs.
  • Recycle batteries safely at approved collection or recycling centers.

How You Can Participate

  • Share fire safety messages with roommates, housemates, family, friends, and neighbors.
  • Inspect the devices and chargers in your living spaces to ensure they’re in good condition.
  • Understand how to use and charge devices responsibly.
